This Fair Isle Cushion is knitted with naturally coloured wools from native British breeds. The background is fabulous Boreray wool and the Fair Isle sections are knitted with North Ronaldsay and Badgerface Welsh Mountain wools. The cushion is patterned on the front and virtually plain on the back, with just a contrast strip either side of the buttoned opening. It is knitted in a single piece. Five polyester buttons are included in this kit to complete the project.
The design was inspired by the Norse merchant ship used by the Vikings and known as a knarr. The knarr was a cargo ship and will have been used to carry their short-tailed sheep around the north Atlantic, including the early Boreray and North Ronaldsay sheep whose wool is included in this design.
To complete the project you will require one pair of 3.75 mm straight needles and a 38 cm (15 inch) square cushion pad.
