Bolga Basket pattern
This crocheted basket is made entirely from wool working the stitches tightly and wrapping around a resting yarn when working the sides to give added strength and rigidity. The basic shape was inspired by woven Bolga baskets made in Northern Ghana and available from www.injabulo.com.
A colourwork pattern is given, though this may be simplified by choosing a single colour for more than one pattern colour if preferred.
Yarn:
This basket is made using super chunky or equivalent. This can be achieved by using multiple strands of other weight yarns as a single yarn, again with up to ten shades, for example:
• 2 strands aran weight, or
• 3 strands dk weight, or
• 1 strand aran with 3 strands 4 ply, or
• 6 strands 4 ply.
Quantity:
Approx 350-400g British breed wool in a variety of breeds and/or shades.
Also needed:
5.5 mm crochet hook
4 stitch markers or safety pins
Approximate finished size:
Working with two strands of aran weight wool together, the finished size of the basket is 24 cm diameter, 15 cm tall.
